Straight Razor Shaves 101: Why Nashville Men Are Going Old Fashioned

Jack Willis August 3, 2026 3 minutes read

There’s a reason the straight razor shave never really went out of style — it just went quiet for a few decades. Lately, more Nashville men are seeking it out again, trading disposable cartridges for a blade, a steady hand, and a ritual that hasn’t changed much in over a century. It’s not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake; it’s a genuinely closer, smoother shave, delivered the old-fashioned way.

The Craft Behind Every Straight Razor Shave

A proper straight razor shave starts long before the blade ever touches skin. A hot towel opens the pores and softens the beard. A barber works up a rich, warm lather by hand — usually with a badger brush — and works it into the skin in slow, deliberate strokes. Only then does the razor come out: a single, honed edge, stropped to a mirror finish, guided along the grain of the beard with a precision no cartridge or electric shaver can match.

It’s a skill that takes years to master. Angle, pressure, and tension all have to be right, every single pass, or the result is irritation instead of a clean line. That’s part of why the experience feels different from shaving at home: you’re not rushing through a morning routine, you’re sitting back and letting someone who has done this thousands of times do the work. The payoff is a shave that’s closer than anything self-administered, with none of the razor burn, nicks, or ingrown hairs that come from dragging a dull multi-blade cartridge across your face.

There’s also a technical reason a straight razor outperforms a cartridge: a single, freshly honed blade cuts each hair cleanly at the surface in one pass, instead of tugging it up and slicing it multiple times the way multi-blade cartridges do. That single-pass cut is gentler on the skin and is a big part of why men with sensitive skin or a tendency toward ingrown hairs and razor bumps often find straight razor shaves far more comfortable long-term. It’s not a gimmick — it’s just better mechanics, applied by someone trained to use them.

The finish matters just as much as the shave itself. A good barber closes things out with a cool towel and an aftershave balm to calm the skin, and most men find the results last longer — and feel better — when they follow up at home with quality grooming products for men built for exactly this kind of routine.

Nashville has no shortage of places to get a haircut, but a true straight razor shave is a different experience altogether — part grooming, part tradition, part twenty minutes to just sit still and be taken care of. If you’ve never had one, it’s worth the trip. Once you have, you’ll understand exactly why old fashioned is making such a strong comeback.
