Setting Up the Perfect Nano Tank for Nano Shrimp

Jack Willis October 6, 2026 3 minutes read

Nano shrimp are one of the easiest ways to bring color, movement, and personality into a small aquarium. Cherry shrimp and other dwarf species thrive in tanks as small as five to ten gallons, making them a great fit for desks, countertops, and apartments. But a small tank leaves less room for error. With a little planning before your shrimp arrive, you can build a stable, healthy home where they will graze, molt, and breed for years.

How to Build a Shrimp-Friendly Nano Tank

Choose the Right Tank and Filter

Start with a tank of at least five gallons. Larger volumes hold more stable water parameters, which matters because shrimp are sensitive to sudden swings in temperature and water chemistry. A sponge filter is the go-to choice for shrimp keepers: it provides gentle flow, gives beneficial bacteria a place to grow, and cannot suck up baby shrimp. Pair it with a reliable heater set between 72 and 76°F and a lid to keep curious climbers inside.

Cycle the Tank Before Adding Shrimp

Never add shrimp to a brand-new tank. Cycling builds up the bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate, and it usually takes four to six weeks. Use a liquid test kit and wait until ammonia and nitrite both read zero before adding livestock. A water conditioner that removes chlorine and chloramine is a must for every water change.

Add Plants and Hiding Spots

Shrimp spend most of their day picking at surfaces for biofilm, so live plants and mosses are more than decoration. Java Moss, Christmas Moss, and Anubias are hardy, low-light options that trap food, shelter freshly molted shrimp, and help absorb waste. A few botanicals, such as Indian almond leaves, add even more grazing surface.

Feed Lightly and Keep Water Stable

In an established nano tank, shrimp find much of their food on their own. Supplement with a quality shrimp food two or three times a week, offering only what they can finish within a couple of hours. Overfeeding is the fastest way to foul a small tank. Plan on 10 to 20 percent water changes each week, matching the temperature and adding new water slowly.

Conclusion

A perfect nano shrimp tank comes down to patience and stability: the right filter, a fully cycled tank, plenty of plants, and a light hand with food. Get those basics right and your shrimp will reward you with bright colors, constant activity, and, before long, a colony of their own. Once your tank is ready, choosing healthy, well-acclimated shrimp from a trusted source is the final step to a thriving setup.
