A First-Timer’s Guide to Shipping a Car Across the Country

Jack Willis July 27, 2026 2 minutes read

Shipping a car for the first time can feel a little intimidating — you’re handing your vehicle off to strangers and trusting it will show up in one piece, hundreds or thousands of miles away. The good news is that the process is more straightforward than it looks once you know what to expect. Here’s a plain-English walkthrough of what actually happens from quote to delivery.

What First-Time Shippers Should Know

It starts with a quote. You’ll provide the pickup and drop-off locations, the vehicle’s make and model, and your preferred timeline. A reliable car shipping service will walk you through pricing before you commit to anything, so you know exactly what you’re paying for and why.

Next comes the transport method. Most vehicles travel by open auto transport, which is the standard and most affordable option. If you’re shipping something higher-value — a classic car, a luxury vehicle, or anything you’d rather protect from weather and road debris — an enclosed trailer is worth the extra cost.

You’ll also choose between terminal and door-to-door delivery. Terminal shipping means dropping off and picking up your vehicle at a designated lot, while door-to-door service brings the carrier directly to you at both ends. It’s a small convenience that first-timers tend to appreciate once they realize how much time it saves.

Before pickup, take photos of your vehicle from every angle, check the fuel level, and remove any personal belongings — most carriers won’t cover items left inside. Ask your provider what insurance applies during transit, since coverage limits and deductibles can vary from one company to the next.

Timing matters more than most first-timers expect. Standard shipping windows can stretch a few days on either end depending on carrier routes, so if your move is time-sensitive, ask about expedited car shipping upfront rather than assuming a rush option is automatically available.

Where you’re shipping from and to also shapes what to expect. Carrier availability, local pickup logistics, and seasonal demand can all vary quite a bit by state, so it helps to ask your provider what’s typical for your specific route.

Shipping a car across the country isn’t complicated once you understand the basic steps: get a clear quote, pick the right transport method and delivery option, prepare your vehicle properly, and account for timing. Do those four things, and your first experience shipping a car should go about as smoothly as it can.
