One of the nicest things about shrimp is how little attention they need. Still, a few days away calls for some planning. With a bit of preparation, your colony can stay comfortable until you return.
Short Trips Are Easy
For a weekend or a few days, healthy shrimp can go without feeding. They graze on biofilm and plants throughout the day. Do a water change and check your equipment before you leave.
Test Equipment First
Make sure the filter, air pump, and heater are working well. A failing device is more dangerous than a missed meal. Replace worn parts and secure airline tubing before you go.
Avoid Feeders Unless Necessary
Automatic feeders and vacation food blocks can foul the water if they dissolve poorly. For short trips, skipping feeding is safer. For longer trips, ask a trusted friend to feed lightly.
Choose a Careful Helper
If someone checks on your tank, give them clear written instructions. Show them how much to feed, and tell them not to add anything else. A simple checklist prevents mistakes.
Control Light and Temperature
Use a timer for lights, and keep the room temperature steady. Avoid placing the tank in direct sun while you are away. Stability is the goal.
Top Off Water
Evaporation can raise mineral concentration. Fill the tank to a normal level with matched water before leaving. Keep the lid in place to reduce loss.
Return Gently and Observe
When you come home, look the tank over before making changes. Test the water and do a modest water change. Resume normal feeding slowly, starting with a small portion, and watch that every shrimp is active and grazing again within a day.
Plan for Emergencies
Leave your helper a contact number and instructions on what to do if the power goes out. A battery air pump in the closet is a cheap safeguard. Knowing there is a plan makes it easier to relax. Write down your tank volume, normal temperature, and feeding amounts on a card by the tank so your helper does not have to guess.
Longer Absences
For trips over a week, consider asking someone to check in every few days, not just once. Regular glances catch issues early and keep small problems from growing.
Peace of Mind
With some planning, your colony will be fine, and you can enjoy your trip without worry. When you are back and ready to expand, take a look at our cherry shrimp for sale and add a few new members to the family.
