How Colorado Hailstorms Damage Gutters (and What to Do About It)

Jack Willis October 3, 2026 3 minutes read

Few places in the country see hail as often as Colorado’s Front Range. From late spring through summer, storms can build over the foothills in the afternoon and drop ice across Loveland, Fort Collins, and Greeley in minutes. After a hailstorm, most homeowners think first about their roof and their car, but gutters take a beating too, and the damage is easy to miss until the next heavy rain exposes it.

What Hail Does to Your Gutters and How to Respond

Aluminum gutters are lightweight and durable, but they are no match for golf ball-sized hailstones. Impacts leave dents along the front edge and bottom of the gutter, and those dents do more than look bad. They create low spots where water collects, adding weight and stress to the hangers, and they can crack the protective coating, leaving the metal more exposed to corrosion.

Once the storm has passed, walk around your home and look closely at the gutters and downspouts. Watch for dents, cracked seams, bent hangers, and sections that have pulled away from the fascia. Hail also knocks loose shingle granules, which wash into the gutters and settle as a gritty layer at the bottom, so a heavy buildup of granules is a sign your roof took a hit as well. If you’re not sure how serious the damage is, a trusted provider of residential gutter services Loveland, CO can inspect the system and tell you whether it needs repair or replacement.

Clearing the gutters soon after a storm is just as important as checking for damage. Hail often strips leaves and small branches from nearby trees, and combined with melting ice and shingle granules, that debris can clog gutters and downspouts quickly. If the system is still blocked when the next storm arrives, water will spill over the edge instead of draining away from your home.

It is also a good idea to document any damage right away. Take dated photos of dents, cracks, and loose sections, and note the date and time of the storm. Many homeowner insurance policies cover hail damage to gutters, and clear records make the claims process far smoother.

Small dents that don’t affect water flow may be purely cosmetic, but anything that causes water to pool, leak, or overflow should be addressed quickly. Left alone, a damaged section can pull loose from the fascia, rot the wood behind it, or send runoff toward your foundation. If you are replacing gutters after a major storm, heavier-gauge aluminum or seamless systems are worth considering, since they hold up better to future impacts.

Hail is simply part of life in Colorado, but it doesn’t have to leave lasting damage behind. By inspecting your gutters after every major storm, clearing out debris, documenting what you find, and repairing problems promptly, you can keep your gutter system protecting your home through every hail season to come.
