Why Online Reading Fundraisers Are Replacing Traditional Product Sales

Jack Willis July 2, 2026 2 minutes read

For decades, school fundraisers meant one thing: catalogs. Wrapping paper, cookie dough, magazines, candy bars — families filled out order forms, handled cash, and hoped the unsold inventory wouldn’t pile up in the garage. That model is fading fast. More schools are moving toward reading-based fundraising that runs entirely online, and once you see how it compares, it’s easy to understand why.

The Problem With Selling Things — and What’s Replacing It

Traditional product fundraisers come with real friction. Someone has to manage order forms, collect payments, distribute inventory, and chase down unsold boxes. Profit margins are often thin, since a large chunk of every dollar goes toward the cost of the product itself rather than the school. And for families, it usually means knocking on neighbors’ doors or forwarding an order form to relatives who already bought last year’s box of gift wrap.

Reading-based, fully digital fundraisers remove almost all of that friction. There’s no inventory to store, no product to deliver, and no cash changing hands. Students simply log their reading progress, sponsors pledge support online, and everything is tracked automatically. Teachers and coordinators can watch results update in real time instead of manually tallying order forms at the end of the week.

The financial case is just as compelling. Because there’s no cost of goods to cover, schools typically keep a much larger share of what’s raised. Instead of splitting revenue with a fundraising catalog company, the majority of every donation goes directly toward the school’s actual goals — new equipment, field trips, classroom supplies, or program funding.

Kids benefit too. Rather than being asked to persuade people to buy something they don’t need, students are rewarded for doing something genuinely good for them: reading. It reframes the entire experience from a sales pitch into a personal challenge, which tends to make it more enjoyable for the very people the fundraiser depends on.

Conclusion

The shift away from selling products isn’t just a passing trend — it reflects what schools, parents, and kids all actually want from a fundraiser: something simpler, fairer, and more meaningful. That’s exactly the gap an online reading fundraiser fills, replacing inventory and order forms with a simple link families can share in seconds. As more schools make the switch, traditional product sales may soon be the exception rather than the rule.
